Interval Running (And Biking)

Today I did pyramid interval running for 30 minutes on the treadmill and the following strength workout (my own cocktail of exercises):  20 calf raise bridges, 20 standing side leg lifts per leg, 20 fire hydrants per side, 20 lying inner leg lifts per side, 20 pac man crunches (8 lb), 20 Barre rainbow crunches per side (5 lb), 30 sec elbow plank, 20 reverse crunches, progressive sets of the following: hammer curls, double tricep kickbacks, reverse flies, skull crushers I am in PAIN from two days in a row of strength training when I was out of the strength groove for so long. It's one of those crawl-into-bed-and-blog days! So you might wonder what interval running is. It's part of the larger concept of interval training: where you work out with heavy duty intensity for a short period of time and then a recovery period, heavy duty intensity, recovery period - over and over again. It burns fat, allows you to achieve results in a shorter period of time, and gets you out of t...

WOD - Friday, October 19

Since I'm too worn out to write a long post, it's workout of the day (WOD) time! Here's what I did: - Walked/hiked 4.6 miles (578 feet in elevation gain), 77 minutes (although that includes stopping to take photos and tripping over a crap ton of sticks and rocks hidden under the leaves) Here are some pics from today's walk/hike. I started at my house and walked to a little pond, then took a couple trails in the woods up to the top of the hill, then walked down to get back home. I don't drive so walking has given me both an awesome form of exercise AND independence. I'm thankful for the trails near my house! I'm a total nature lover and incorporating the woods into my workout is where it's at. Plus it's a HUGE mood booster.  For strength training, I did: ARMS - 20 upper cuts (5 lb weights) Progressive sets (15 light / 12 medium / 8 heavy / 8 heavy / 12 medium / 15 light) - bent over rows - lying down chest pre...

Hi, Hello, and Hey

I’m Mary and I’m a fibromyalgia and pulmonary embolism warrior. I’m also an EX-yo-yo’er. I used to have an eating disorder in college and was underweight. I was obsessive about calories and abused my body in the quest to be skinny. When I started meds for an unrelated illness, my weight shot up to 180. I then became pregnant and, with pre-eclampsia (hello, water retention!), I hit an all-new high. Within one week of giving birth, I had lost over 40 pounds, but over the course of the next couple years, I gained it all back and then some. I hit my new high: 275. I lost some weight after that, but did it in an unsustainable way so I gained some of it back. 250. Then I broke my ankle while hiking and ended up with pulmonary emboli (blood clots in my lungs) that almost took my life. In addition to the injury and my family history, being overweight is a risk factor for clots. Somehow that didn’t hit home and I gained another 30 pounds while I was laid up. A daily serving (or two) of b...
